“Our News”
Media is generally defined as "the main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet), regarded collectively a powerful tool for change." It plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and discourse. Many argue that a free press is essential to any society. What is covered by the media is discussed by the public.
The female illiteracy rate in India is 50%. Societal pressure and a lack of resources are primarily responsible for the low female literacy rate. The media has the power to help change society's perception of the girl child. Although there maybe few women in the world of journalism in India, women have recognized the power that the media has to change their lives.
Bihar is the fastest growing state in terms of gross state domestic product (GSDP) in India, however, it remains one of the least developed states. 70% of child marriages in India take place in the state of Bihar with the female literacy rate lagging at 53%. The sex ratio of girls to boys is skewed 9:10. Girls in poverty stricken areas can expect to be married by age sixteen. Their marriage signifies the end of their aspirations and dreams. That has been the cultural norm in many poverty stricken regions of Bihar.
However, there are a group of girls that have challenged this expectation. They are using all of the tools at their disposal to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by women that are not in the news. Journalist and activist Santosh Satrang established Aapan Samachar (Our news) a news broadcast that is aired once every two weeks at weekly markets in the villages of Bihar. Electricity is a precious resource in the region and all of the villagers contribute money so the girls are able to air the broadcast.
There are few women in the world of journalism in India, so it is truly inspiring when a few village girls band together to create and publish their own newspaper to advocate for their own rights.
