<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Let it Yahoo! - I am the type of person who prefers to experience the snow sitting by the window, curled up on the couch watching TV. My mom decided to take a trip back in time. I first heard the loud exclamations of "Yahoo" coming from the TV and I am not talking about Yahoo mail. I am pretty sure that many of my Indian readers have already guessed what my mom was playing on the TV. It was none other than Shammi Kapoor's iconic "Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe" song from a 1961 Bollywood movie. For my readers uninitiated in 60s Bollywood, it means "It doesn't matter if someone calls me wild". Shammi Kapoor, also known as India's Elvis Pressley for his gyrating moves was soon christened the Yahoo man of India after this song. This song is set in the beautiful valley of Kashmir - the Switzerland of India. When Indians think of snow and beauty together, we think fondly of Kashmir, and this song is an epitome of the beauty and romance of a snow-covered Kashmir, even though some of the gyrations may require a temporary suspension of reality.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Not Forgotten, Never Alone - There are 153 million children worldwide who are orphans with an estimated 31 million orphans living in India.</image:title>
<image:caption>Yet, we never hear our elected officials, whether it be in India or the United States, discuss their plight; the plight of children who have no one looking out for them. The loss of parents leaves children vulnerable to exploitation, and more often than not their problems are left forgotten. The media would rather focus on what name-brand clothes a celebrity's child is wearing, rather than the plight of the children who are fighting for survival. You wouldn’t pick at a still-healing wound, it would hurt you. Then why would we pick at the emotional wounds that people bear? The loss of parents not only leaves children vulnerable to trauma, but the loss itself leaves a mark on children. Yet, we constantly remind them of that loss, that trauma. This is particularly evident in Hindi (the national language of India) which refers to orphans as 'anath'.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - An Untreated Epidemic - Women have been excluded from the production of medical and scientific knowledge for centuries, thus establishing a healthcare system that exclusively benefits men and exacerbates the already pervasive influence of implicit gender bias on health care. Researchers have criticized the exclusion of women from clinical research dating back to the 1970s as a method of developing biased medical knowledge (Hamberg 238) that has significantly disadvantaged women’s healthcare due to the years in which females were and still are excluded from biomedical research.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - An Untreated Epidemic - Women’s issues are not taken seriously by doctors due to the preconceived stereotypes of hysteria that pervades the healthcare field. On the other hand, the fact that women are twice as likely to be reported as depressed than men is commonly attributed to the socio-cultural and biological processes of women. However, recent research on medical history suggests that even before depression was described and established as a diagnosis in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III, psychiatrists assumed that women were more often depressed than men (Hamberg 239).</image:title>

Our fear of the Coronavirus is almost as great a threat as COVID-19 itself. As the number of Coronavirus cases continues to rise, so too does the impact on daily life around the world. The fear of the virus has a pervasive influence over our lives. We fear the new and unknown quality of the threat and the uncertainty associated with it, rather than the virus itself. Stockpiling of non/essentials like masks, toilet paper, groceries, bread, sanitizers is evident as empty shelves at grocery stores look like it's Black Friday come again…minus the discounts.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - We Will Remember - For many, this Valentine's Day was a day of agony and fear rather than that of joy. On that fateful day, the lives of seventeen individuals each unique and all cherished by their family and friends were sacrificed to senseless gun violence. February 14th, 2018 must be and will be remembered as the start of a new beginning. We have held vigils, honored the lost and watched the news with attention every time there has been a mass shooting.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Bone-A-Fide Fun!! - The Perry Initiative introduces girls to an entirely new world of possibilities and opportunities. It provides a taste of what it means to be an engineer or an orthopedic surgeon. Although I have yet to learn a lot more about engineering, I always recognized the importance of STEM to many professions. However, I definitely did not appreciate how engineering influenced/contributed to the biomedical field. The Perry Initiative demonstrated how exactly doctors work with engineers to deliver the best quality of healthcare to patients...I was introduced to an entirely new facet of health care and engineering through this program.</image:title>
<image:caption>I never thought that surgery would also involve working with oscillating drills, screws, metal plates, hammers and wrenches; things that till now I only associated with machinery and hardware. I never thought about how doctors actually screw the metal plates on the bone to hold it together, or how they insert a rod for stabilization. Now, I can actually understand why an operation is sometimes necessary to heal broken bones.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - What it means “to go back” - President Trump has suggested that black, Latina and Muslim congresswomen critical of his policies should “go back” to “the totally broken and crime infested” countries “from which they came,” even though all but one of the lawmakers he has been attacking were born in the United States. Unfortunately, President Trump’s attack against four Democratic members of Congress fits a pattern in U.S. politics. The idea that immigrants and their descendants should either accept America as it is, or “go home” is reminiscent of attacks made against other groups a century ago. In fact there is hardly any ethnic or racial group in the country that hasn’t been told to go back where they came from.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Not more or less...just another point of view - To this end, it is essential to eliminate prejudicial language that reinforces stereotypes and undermines individuals’ capabilities. This ultimately leads us to the question, why does the USPS, a formal entity of the U.S government, utilize and encourage the usage of vocabulary such as "handicapped" through the “E040 Free Matter for the Blind and Other Physically Handicapped Persons” regulation, to describe people who require modifications in their methods/modes of communication.</image:title>
<image:caption>The term handicapped is generally defined as "having a condition that markedly restricts one's ability to function physically, mentally, or socially". The wording of E040 is archaic. Even Google categorizes the term “handicapped” as "dated" and "offensive”. There are negative connotations to the term "handicapped" when referring to a person who has a disability. The word “handicapped” has existed for centuries, but was not associated with people with disabilities until the late 1800s - people falsely, though commonly, believe that the term "handicapped" was first used in relation to individuals with disabilities, when Civil War veterans whose injuries prevented them from working resorted to begging on the streets with a "cap in hand". The term “handicapped” over time has tended to conjure up images of begging and associates it with people impacted by disabilities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Not more or less...just another point of view - “Handicapped” along with at least 26% of our country. I am handicapped because I simply cannot understand subsection E040 of the regulation that governs the United States Postal Service.</image:title>
<image:caption>“Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can bring tears from the hardest hearts.” (Patrick Roth Fuss, The Name of the Wind). The words we think, speak and believe have the power to open or close doors of opportunity and success for us. The language we use affects self-perception and influences our behavior and attitude.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Remembering Christchurch...Not - One can endlessly argue over who and what factors are responsible for this massacre. The Daily Mail can argue video game maybe to blame for the perpetrator's hatred towards Muslims or the fact that his father died of cancer. But the question remains is that when an Islamic extremist commits such an attack why does the news media not question the provocation and circumstances of their actions. Why does the news media seek to find the "humanity" of only right wing extremists? How is it possible to describe a man who killed 50 people in cold blood as "an angelic boy" a day after the massacre? That in and of itself is an insult to the families who lost their loved ones by his hands.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - The Impact of Clean Water on the Developing World - Water scarcity is responsible for the endemic sickness pervasive in the developing world preventing educational and economic progress. The prevalence of illness and poor health in developing countries where as much as “80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions” (“Facts About Water”), is mostly attributed to a dearth of clean water. Contaminated water and lack of basic sanitation undermine efforts to end extreme poverty and disease in the world’s poorest countries. The lack of medical resources leaves the poor particularly vulnerable to chronic illnesses that impede their economic and educational progress.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Maternal Health - It is also important to put equal emphasis on the mother's health. Treatment concerning symptoms such as hypertension, preeclampsia, signs that may develop during pregnancy, or soon after delivery must be carefully monitored and administered. To demonstrate, the State of California has significantly cut on maternal mortality rates by creating collaborative manuals such as hemorrhage tool kit which detail how to respond in emergency situations. The state of California created a pregnancy-related mortality review board to research the causes of mortality and brought together clinicians, hospitals and other maternity experts to analyze the data for solutions.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - The State of the ACA - The Affordable Care Act is still the law of the land despite it being under siege for almost a decade. However, the individual mandate which was the supporting pillar of The Affordable Care Act has been repealed. Also, despite the fact that the ACA was ruled to be unconstitutional by a federal judge in Texas on Friday, the ruling will not change the health-care coverage for millions of Americans.</image:title>
<image:caption>The Affordable Care Act is perceived as both a Pandora's box as well as Santa's Box. The number of uninsured fell to a low of 28.1 million people, or just 8.8 percent of the population, in 2016 under the ACA. The ACA provides coverage for 10 essential health benefits and pre-existing conditions. Children can also stay on their parents' health insurance plans. However, many argue that it takes away individual choice and is associated with many economic consequences.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Pain Caused by Painkillers - Opioids act on opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord to reduce the intensity of pain signal perception. In the late 1990s, the medical community had surmised that prescription opioid pain relievers were relatively innocuous, therefore healthcare providers began to prescribe them at greater rates. This subsequently led to the widespread misuse of opioid pain relievers before it was finally understood that opioids were highly addictive substances.</image:title>

The girls themselves have experienced the familial pressure to marry young, witnessed domestic abuse, and struggled to gain access to education. Their personal experience allow them to narrate stories that are ignored by the main stream media with a unique perspective. Not only, has the news broadcast Aapan Samachar emphasized the need for promoting girls’ rights and education in Bihar’s villages in the international community but has also proven that the media can be a powerful weapon to advocate for change.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Still as Supreme? - To simply say that Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation was controversial would be a gross understatement. He was confirmed by a 50-48 Senate majority that voted almost entirely along party lines. This was expected by the public. What was not expected, was that the hearings that began as a debate over Judge Kavanaugh's controversial judicial policy, would eventually descend to a mock trial concerning serious allegations of sexual harassment.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Digital Health - To be digitally responsible is to imply that one uses technology in a manner that is not harmful to others and comprehends the impact that technology has on our health, environment and society in general. The amount of time that we spend on screen has been steadily increasing. Per the journal Common Sense, in 2017 children under the age of eight spent on average 48 minutes a day using mobile devices up from 15 minutes in 2013. With the development of the IPhone the frequency and the manner in which we utilized screen technology has dramatically evolved.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Why it Matters? - Education mitigates the harm caused to girls by poverty and violence. They gain the ability to pursue their aspirations. India will eventually, comprise 25% of the world’s labor pool per the Guardian. According to the Economist though, only 25% of Indian women are in the workforce. So, essentially a quarter of the population in a country that will provide 25% of the world’s labor is illiterate. In response to the increasing demand for educational opportunity, publicly funded campaigns have been launched that target the causes responsible for the dearth of female education. However, education is still not a major priority for the Indian government. Which is why it is up to individuals like us to advocate for educational equality, and take a stand for girls’ education.</image:title>
<image:caption>Only we have the ability to raise awareness, only we have the ability to encourage elected officials to actually address female education, and only we have the ability to ensure that no child regardless of gender is denied their basic right to an education.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Digital Empowerment - Only 29% of internet users in India are women and only 28% of women own mobiles. Even fewer women fully understand how to operate mobiles fully. If they are illiterate then they cannot dial phone numbers and read messages or even browse on the internet. They cannot avail from the benefits provided by the internet.</image:title>
<image:caption>Technology is essential to the development of any society. In current times, technology plays an especially important role in terms of educational, and economic opportunity. We have observed in the United states how online activity influences offline activity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Something normal… - Menstruation is a source of embarrassment and humiliation for many adolescent girls. They maybe mocked and humiliated if it is discovered that they are menstruating at the time. Thus, they are less likely to attend school. Schools located in disenfranchised communities often lack the funding to provide washrooms and sanitary facilities, further worsening the problem. The picture on the right is a depiction of an outdoor school run entirely by volunteers in Gurugram, India. However, students do not have access to facilities. Girls have to often rush home to answer nature's call.</image:title>
<image:caption>In fact, inconvenience due to periods is considered one of the major causes of school absenteeism among young girls and their eventual drop out. According to the FSG the percentage of out-of-school boys and girls in the age group of 6–10 years was 5.51 per cent and 6.87 per cent respectively; however, for the adolescent age group of 11–13 years, the percentage of out-of-school children was much higher among girls (10.03 per cent) than boys (6.46 per cent).</image:caption>

The military has exacting standards around it's recruitment for everyone and so, I will not delve into purported 'fitness'? for any transgender individual who qualified for military service. For instance, Kristin Beck a transgender veteran served as a Navy Seal and earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for her service. I will not even question transgender patriotism as no government or news agency has presented any data around lower levels of patriotism or integrity among transgender military personnel.</image:title>

<image:title>Rishima's Blog - Where are we? - The age old mentality and practices in rural communities persist as a result of the quality of education and girl protection offered. A girl is raised to be of assistance in domestic work and finally grows to be a housewife. Her life revolves around raising her family and managing the domestic responsibility of preparing food and providing care for her family members. Thus, there is little improvement in the quality of education offered to impoverished communities and villages. There is an absence of the funds needed to provide safe and sanitary facilities for girls to attend. As an illustration, female students feel deprived of their right to privacy and safety due to the lack of bathrooms when they are going through their menstruation cycle.</image:title>

<image:title>Tryst with Destiny - BE it enacted by the King's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows :- 1.-(i) As from the fifteenth day of August, nineteen hundred The new and forty-seven, two independent Dominions shall be set up in Dominions. India, to be known respectively as India and Pakistan. The partition of India led to the largest mass migration and population exchange across land in history wherein migrating people encountered grave difficulty and danger while exploring options for their and their families' futures. A large number of Muslims living in India explored Pakistan as a new home and migrated to Pakistan. Some Muslims were forced to flee and others were killed due to the effects of the partition. Most of the Hindus living in Pakistan were displaced and forced to flee to India. The exchange of Hindus and Muslims between the two countries led to violent and fierce encounters. Massacres and blood shed occurred daily in States like Punjab and Bengal. The partition’s impact created horrific destruction, riots and devastated both India and Pakistan.</image:title>

<image:title>The Price of Freedom - The Independence and subsequent partition of India along religious lines cost around 2 million people their lives and displaced more than 14 million. Systematic attacks against fleeing refugees in Punjab alone killed 500,000 - 800,000 people. The borders between India and Pakistan still act as an obstacle for the two countries to improve diplomatic relations. Due to the indecision of Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir, Pakistani forces attacked Kashmir and killed many Hindus until Maharaja Hari Singh sought protection from India and the Pakistani forces were forced to retreat. The two countries have fought 3 wars and 2 of them over Kashmir. The two countries have engaged in an arms race and are now nuclear capable. Terrorism has plagued the Kashmir valley since Independence with continued religious extremism haunting areas in both Pakistan and India.</image:title>

<image:title>In Conclusion - In Conclusion Creation is the beginning of a new story, of new dreams and new aspirations. The creation of a new nation is reason enough to celebrate but such creation is accompanied with destruction; when lives and souls are ripped apart with a simple change in the map, time moves on and wounds heal but memories, sounds and lessons linger on. Both countries have learned from the hard lessons of the past and despite differences continue to discuss peace. As Wing Commander C.P. Grover aptly advised in his interview "Learn to live together, by solving various issues and create a peaceful environment"</image:title>
